this song first appeared as a secret track on the previously mentioned goodbye girl and has always held a special place in my heart. it has now become even more so thanks to epicure’s last gig at the east brunswick club. as the show neared it’s end, the rest of the band left the stage and juan and his gibson acoustic played solo for the final time to their melbourne fans. towards the end of the song juan became all choked up, trying to suppress his tears and battle his way through to the songs end. it was so beautiful to see how personal his music was to him and everyone in the audience offered their support by cheering him on right til the end.
it’s really jarring to see a band who’ve played such a significant role in your life fade quietly into the night, but i hope they don’t have any regrets about the gamble they took - because even if they didn’t make it, the 15 odd years they spent together making music was definitely not in vain.
this is ‘over her shoulder’.
