Paul Robertson (the artist behind the Scott Pilgrim video game) has set his 8-bit talents to an Attack the Block tribute - and man, he gorramn nails it. For a film that’s had very little to no media buzz in Australia, Attack the Block is a treat that only gets sweeter. The film follows a gang of kids thrust into the midst of an alien invasion… yeah yeah a tired concept, but everything about it seems so refreshing. The action scenes are unique, the dialogue playful, even the alien design is original (Joe Cornish borrowed heavily from rotoscope techniques for that one) everything about the film shouts a big yes. The sad thing is, it’s very probable that the film will go the Scott Pilgrim way and move through its cinema run largely unnoticed. The only big name in the movie is Nick Frost, it’s actually produced by Edgar Wright but there is only a vague buzz around that, and I’ve barely seen any pregame media hype - not even trailers and i may/may not be a massive Cinephile. When Guillermo Del Toro was asked why Hollywood made such shitty films, he simply replied “because when they do great ones you don’t fucking show up”. So if you don’t want Guillermo to call you a Motherfucker, do yourself a favour and go support this film - it’s straight up bruv.
